Les Grands Ballets Canadiens perform Giselle for the first time in 20 years
Arguably the greatest Romantic ballet of all time, Giselle's thrilling story of the supernatural, betrayal and a love that defies death interwoven with Marius Petipa's classic choreography has made it a steadfast favorite in the modern repertory. For the first time in two decades, Montreal's world class company Le Grands Ballets Canadiens presents a faithful adaptation of the iconic ballet, replete with the iconic tableaux of white tutus and pointes.
Set to an exquisite score by Adolphe Adam, the timeless tale follows titular damsel Giselle, a peasant girl with a penchant for dancing. The best dancer in her village, her unparalleled beauty catches the eye of the Duke Albrecht, who unbeknownst to Giselle hides his real identity. When she discovers his deception and that he is betrothed to another, Giselle descends into despair, entering a wild dance that causes her weak heart to give out. When her spirit joins the Wilis, a clan of ghostly, forest-dwelling spirits of maidens betrayed by their lovers, they seek vengeance against the hapless duke.
