If you listen to an Enrico Macias track, one thing becomes clear about the Pied-Noir singer-songwriter - he hasn't had an easy life. Across all 18 of his studio albums, much of Macias' music pays homage to his native Algeria and reflects his experiences after fleeing the Algerian War for Independence at 23. It was from this wreckage that came rebirth, as Macias found himself in Paris at the start of a five-decade-long career that has led to him becoming one of the most influential French-Jewish artists of our generation.
UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim named Macias the 'Singer of Peace' - unsurprising, given his messages of tolerance and the Arab-Andalusian traditions that have enlightened audiences across the globe. Macias has toured North America and even headlined Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has released multiple mainstream pop hits, including "Les Gens du Nord" and "Non Je N'ai Pas Oubli." In addition to his musical success, he composed the international hit "Zingarella" in 1988 and starred in the theatrical drama Quelle Nuit in 1992. In 1985, he was awarded the Lgion d'Honneur by French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius. His most recent album, Enrico Macias & Al Orchestra, was released in 2019.
If his songs aren't playing at weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, engagement parties, or Shabbats - he's likely coming to a city near you!
